En nuestro país el cultivo de la vid, arbusto que produce el fruto de la uva, ha existido desde hace muchos años en vista de que en ciertas regiones del país los suelos son aptos y las condiciones climatológicas favorables.

La provincia de Bahoruco fue donde se inició la producción del cultivo concentrándose las principales áreas de producción en los municipios de Neyba, Galván y Los Ríos. Con el paso del tiempo la población de esas zonas fueron adquiriendo dominio en las técnicas de siembras y cultivo de esta fruta y en virtud del auge, que empezó a cobrar dicho cultivo los productores de uva decidieron agruparse en asociaciones con el propósito de potencializar las  variedades de uvas cultivadas, así como de perfeccionar el procedimiento e industrialización de diversos tipos de bebidas y con los requisitos internacionales que les permitieran competir tanto en el mercado nacional como internacional.

De ahí surgió la iniciativa de proponer al congreso nacional la creación de una institución que protegiera a los vitivinicultores y les brindara todo el apoyo y la colaboración necesarios para continuar desarrollando este tipo de producción agrícola en el país.

Es así como nace el Instituto Nacional de la Uva, en respuesta a la necesidad de dar asistencia técnica a los productores organizados en asociaciones y promover su industrialización y comercialización de los derivados del cultivo, así como respaldar la investigación, la capacitación de los productores y desarrollar transferencias tecnológicas que garanticen mayor producción y productividad.

El INUVA es una institución descentralizada con sede principal en Neyba, Provincia Bahoruco, creada mediante la Ley 27-98 del 16 de enero de 1998, Gaceta oficial NO. 9973.

Hoy en día, el cultivo de la uva constituye uno de los principales rubros en que se basa el potencial desarrollo socio-económico del valle de Neyba, por esta razón es una de las actividades de naturaleza agrícola más dinámica.

En la actualidad existen 310 productores que cultivan 3,000.00 tareas. La producción de uva anual oscila entre 50 y 60 mil quintales. De este total se destina el 85% al consumo fresco y el 15% restante para la elaboración de vinos y otros derivados, generando esta actividad unos 25 millones de pesos anuales.

La producción de vinos industriales se logró a partir del procesamiento de 17 variedades viníferas introducidas desde Italia y validadas sus adaptaciones en la zona, obteniéndose al día de hoy 3 tipos de vinos: Tinto, Blanco y Rosado.

Actualmente se están implementando acciones encaminadas a optimizar la productividad y la comercialización de la uva, dotando a los productores del conocimiento y la capacitación técnica requeridos, a fin de lograr que un mayor número de familias se integren a la producción y comercialización tanto de la fruta como de sus derivados.
